We spent Christmas in the Oklahoma panhandle with Brycie's dad and step-mother. We headed out on Tuesday (instead of the orginally planned Wednesday) because we thought a snow storm was headed for Guymon. We got NO snow in Guymon because the storm took a different path and dumped 14.1 inches of snow in Oklahoma City! We had a great time in Guymon - going to Mass, eating, playing cards, and eating some more. We hope you had a wonderful Christmas Day as well. Remember: Jesus is the Reason for the Season!!

Villa Teresa Christmas Program

The wonderful sisters and teachers at Clare's school created a fantastic Christmas program, and the kids did a great job!! Clare really enjoyed herself and can't wait to do it again next year!!

And yes, it is called a "Christmas" program, and yes, it is about the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. We are SO blessed to be able to provide Clare the opportunity for a Catholic education! Thank you, Jesus!!

"Gotcha Day" 2009

Today was "GOTCHA DAY" 2009. One year ago we were in Guangzhou, China, where we were united with our Clare. We let Clare pick where she wanted to eat this evening. She chose Buffalo Wild Wings. That girl knows how to clean a chicken wing!!!! Actually, she knows how to clean six chicken wings and about a dozen sticks of celery. She had sticky napkins all over the table. Here are some "before" and "after" photos -- Gotcha Day 2008 and Gotcha Day 2009. Just notice the incredible difference. Thank you, Jesus, for blessing us with a wonderful year and a fabulous daughter.

A Big Day For Clare - Re-Adoption Day

Today we took Clare to the Oklahoma County Courthouse for her re-adoption. We won't explain all the reasons why it is important, but it is.

Clare's First Halloween

This was Clare's first Halloween. We went to China on November 7, 2008, so she missed Halloween last year. She really didn't understand what was happening, but she had a good time. We started down the street from our home and went to about ten houses and Clare said she'd had enough and was ready to go home -- so we did. She had her little bucket of candy and that was that. We took our tub of candy across the street to the Ventresca's and doled out the candy from their house. It was a beautiful evening, so they opened the garage door and we all sat in the driveway and handed out the treats to all the little goblins, Spidermen, and Dorothy (I don't think we're in Kansas anymore). What was interesting was that Clare had a wonderful time organizing all her candy into lines and rows. She had more fun doing that than eating the candy.

Villa Teresa Halloween Carnival

We all went to the Halloween Carnival at Villa Teresa Catholic School last Saturday. Lots of kids, lots of games, lots of fun.

Chinese Hannah Montana (how many blonde Chinese girls have you seen lately?) and Sister Veroncia's identical cousin, Veronica the Clown. She is such a good sport.

We spent a glorious Autumn afternoon on Saturday taking pictures of Clare. We haven't been on a photo shoot since Spring, and we were hoping for some nice Fall colors. The trees haven't turned yet except in a few places around town. Hopefully we can shoot more images of Clare when all the trees have dressed out for Autumn. Here in OKC time is really of the essence. Our weather is so unpredictable that the trees can be beautiful one day, and by the next morning, all the trees are bare when the north wind blows. We hope that you enjoy our little photo album of Clare. These photos were taken at Will Rogers Park and at the Oklahoma River. We ran out of daylight before we got back to the Botanical Gardens.

Fall Colors In Oklahoma

Tonight was work night at Villa Teresa Catholic School. We spent the evening working with many other parents unloading wood chips for the playground. It was hard work and lots of fun. Jim worked hard, but took some time to photograph some of the beautiful Fall flowers at the Convent. Autumn is generally a time of fabulous weather here in central Oklahoma. The only drawback to Autumn and all the gorgeous days is that winter is just around the corner. That thought always seems to taint the glory of Fall. Please enjoy the pretty colors.

Clare Eats Her Way Through Her First State Fair Of Oklahoma

We took Clare to her first "Great State Fair Of Oklahoma" yesterday. She loved it! She started with corn on the cob, then nachos and Indian tacos, then dippin' dots. We rode the OG&E space needle, then started eating. We checked out many of the exhibits and watched people. The weather was beautiful and we had a great time.

At long last -- "Esquire"

That glorious day finally arrived. Brycie is now an attorney. She was sworn in by the Chief Justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court at the State Capitol this morning. What an accomplishment!!! Yay, Brycie. We are so proud of you!

1st Violin Lesson

We have decided that we want Clare to try many different activities so that she can discover what she is interested in. (And Jim always envisioned that his precious Chinese daughter would play the violin.) Ms. Krug comes to Clare's school to give private violin lessons. She is wonderful! She is so patient! Big Truck Tacos!

We have been hearing about a new eating establishment in OKC - Big Truck Tacos. The restaurant (located at 530 N.W. 23rd) is open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. then the Truck ventures out in the evenings to serve tacos at different events/venues around town. We tried "CJ's Verde Pork" taco, "Crispy'cado" taco (FRIED avocado), "Chicken Al Carbon" taco and "Beef Al Carbon" taco. The food was yummy - and a bit pricey. But we'll go again for a little treat.

Clare Begins First Grade At Villa Teresa Catholic School

On Monday, August 17, 2009, our sweet daughter began first grade at Villa Teresa Catholic School. She spent most of April and part of May attending Villa Teresa, and went through their summer program, but her formal education began last Monday. Isn't she just precious in her little Catholic school plaid jumper.

Last evening Sandra and Daniela came over for dinner and then a game of Yahtzee. Clare kicked everybody. Actually, it wasn't even close. Jim was dead last as usual. Poor daddy!

Midwest Catholic Family Conference in Wichita

Jim, Brycie, Marina and Clare attended the Midwest Catholic Family Conference in Wichita, Kansas, August 7-9. What a tremendous blessing! We were accompanied by our dear friends, and Clare's Godparents, Kent and Paige Keithly and their children, Joe, Alice, Mary and Harris, from Enid. We heard a fabulous group of speakers. The primary reason we went was to see and hear Immaculee Ilibagiza. She is a survivor of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, where a million Tutsi people were slaughtered by Hutu tribesmen. She and seven other women hid for 91 days in a cramped bathroom of a local pastor's home. With the exception of one brother, who was studying out of the country at the time of the genocide, her entire family was savagely murdered. When most would have sought revenge, Immaculee turned to prayer, praying the Rosary her father had given her. As a result of her constant prayer she was able to forgive those who murdered her family. She is the author of three books. The first, Left to Tell, is her story of her experience. The second, Led By Faith, continues her story of prayer and forgiveness. Her third book, Our Lady of Kibeho, is the story of the appearances of Mother Mary to three school girls in a small Rwandan town. We have read her books and were so anxious to hear her and see her. What a remarkable woman!

We also had the privilege of seeing and hearing Tim Staples, a former Southern Baptist who attended Jimmy Swaggart Bible College. A Catholic friend he met in the Marines challenged Tim to study Catholicism. In an effort prove Catholicism wrong he spent the next six years discovering that they were right. He is a brilliant apologist and we were fortunate to hear him.

Johnnette Benkovic was also a guest speaker. She is known internationally for her Catholic evangelization, and has a weekly television program on EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network). She is an incredibly dynamic speaker.

Tony Melendez was the featured musician. He was a thalidomide baby born without arms. He plays his guitar with his feet. An amazing musician; an amazing study in perseverance. In 1987 he was asked to play for Pope John Paul II in Los Angeles.

End-of-Summer Visit to Texas

August 3-6 Brycie took Marina, Drake, Drew & Clare to Georgetown, Texas, to visit Meme.

On Tuesday, one of Clare's best friends from China, Sarah Chang, came up from Houston with her mom and two sisters and met us at the Main Event for bowling and pizza. Clare and Sarah hugged each other and smiled but didn't interact too much. Who knows what's going on in those little minds of theirs?!?! We will keep them connected, and hopefully they will choose to be lifelong friends. Our wonderful adoption agency, Great Wall China Adoption, is located in Austin, so we went with Sarah's family to visit the fabulous staff who helped us adopt our girls.

On Wednesday, we went to visit Meme's boyfriend Gary who lives on the shores of Lake Travis.

We had a great time!!

Here are quite a few photos we took last weekend when we visited Brycie's dad and stepmom in Guymon, Oklahoma. Our blog is taking on a whole new look. It has become "Our Journey WITH Clare Isabella JiaQi." We began way back last year before we traveled to China. We have tried to chronicle our journey to and with sweet Clare. Our purpose and intent in this blog is to share with our friends, neighbors, relatives, and those who just "happen on" to our blog, our wonderful new life with Clare Isabella JiaQi Loepp. So, we want you to meet Clare's family and friends. We want to share with you the wonderful things happening in Clare's new life with a mommy and daddy. We used to say "mama and baba" -- now it is mommy and daddy. It is not our intention to bore you with family photos. It is our intention to please you with family photos. If you are a regular follower, we want you to know us "up close and personal." This picture, and the next, are of Marina's friend, Brooke. She is quite an accomplished swimmer. She has been driving to Hutchinson, Kansas, from her home in Pratt, Kansas, for a number of years, to train. She does this year around. As a result, she has become an NCAA Division I prospect. She is looking at both The University of Kansas and The University of Texas for an opportunity to swim for a Division I school. We asked her to show us several of her "strokes."

Last weekend we took Clare, Marina, Drake, and Marina's good friend, Brooke, to Guymon, out in the Oklahoma Panhandle, to see Papa and GranTerrie. Clare had quite a time. That girl loves the water. Enjoy Clare in the pool.

When we had Clare's baptism a few weeks ago, Terrie and Keith came to celebrate with us. We had planned a brunch after Mass, and honestly thought we had it all together. Then, things started happening and Jim was in a "tizzy". Terrie stepped in and calmly got everything in order. Thanks, Terrie.

Clare had a wonderful time last weekend. She got to attend her very first "Hutson Family Reunion." Brycie's paternal grandmother was a Hutson, and they have gathered together for years and years to celebrate. This year the reunion was in Ft. Worth, Texas, and Clare got to enjoy swimming with her sister, Marina, and her cousin, Mia.

Last night Clare's niece, Carson, came over to visit. They spent the evening watching High School Musical 2 and 3. They danced and ate spaghetti; they ate watermelon and beef jerky; they ate watermelon slushies and drank Sprite. They played with their American Girl dolls (Amy and Kit). They wanted popcorn, but Jim wouldn't fix any. Basically, they ruled the roost from 6:00 p.m. until midnight. Jim was kinda on his own with the girls because Brycie and neighbor Sandra went to see Rick Springfield, and re-live the 80's. Who would go out in 105 degree weather and watch a 60 year old "rocker"? Answer -- Brycie and Sandra and a whole bunch of other crazy women. The next post will be for all you Rick Springfield fans.

Clare's First Fourth of July - 2009

Today was Clare's first Fourth of July, and we had a great time. The day started with a children's parade in our neighborhood, then a neighborhood picnic at the swimming pool. After that, Clare and her mama and daddy went to Bricktown to enjoy the festivities and the fireworks. We ate supper at Abuelo's, and wandered around Bricktown. Then - here came the rain. We took cover at Starbucks and enjoyed a grande Americano, then decided to come on home. The Lord blessed us with a half inch of rain to cool the atmosphere and break the heat wave. Sunday was a glorious day. Clare Isabella JiaQi Loepp was baptized by Father Charles Murphy, Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Church here in Oklahoma City. Present for her baptism were her mother and father, her Godparents, Kent and Paige Keithly, their daughters, Alice and Mary, her sister, Marina, her brothers, Drake and Drew, her grandad, Keith Matthews, her step-grandmother, Terrie Matthews, our neighbors and friends, Angelo, Sandra, and Daniela Ventresca, and many parishioners and Church friends who love her. She is now baptized child of God.

High School Musical 2 - Onstage

Last evening Clare and her mother had a "girl's night out." They went to Lyric Theatre at the Civic Center as they began the 2009 Summer Season. Clare has been watching the movies "High School Musical" versions 1, 2 and 3, over and over and over again at home. Her sister, Marina, got her hooked. Last night Clare and Brycie went to the onstage production of HSM2. They reported having a glorious time. Prior to the production, Brycie took Clare to Trattoria il Centro restaurant downtown in the Montgomery building. Brycie's friend, Julia, told her it (the restaurant) "was to die for." They both came home alive so I guess it wasn't "to die for." They did have a wonderful meal and a wonderful time.

We are so pleased to announce that our sweet Clare will be baptized at Mass on Sunday, June 28. This is a most special event in Clare's young life and we thank God for His love. Last Friday evening, Jim, Brycie, and Clare enjoyed dinner with Jim's sister, Janis, and his brother-in-law, Dave, and Pauline Hodges. Mrs. Hodges (she insists that Jim call her "Pauline," but he can't bring himself to do it) was both Janis' and Jim's high school English teacher. She was probably the most instrumental person in Jim's career choice. She was his speech and debate teacher (and, most of all, his "encourager").

Father's Day was a fine day. Clare got her dad a card and an outdoor thermometer. Then, Clare and her dad went with Jim's sister, Janis and her husband, Dave, from Jacksonville, Illinois, to have lunch with Grandad. Grandad will soon be 93. Jim got phone calls from his kids.

Clare made her dad a cardboard necktie, so, Jim wore it to lunch with Grandad, and then to the grocery store. He got a number of nice comments on the great tie. Thanks, Clare.

We are both amateur photographers and have long awaited the day when we could take some photographs of sweet Clare (not just on-the-go snapshots). We took Clare on Sunday afternoon to a snowcone stand near our home and to the Botanical Gardens and Bricktown in downtown Oklahoma City with several changes of clothes, and spent the afternoon having the time of our lives. May 16 was a momentous day for Brycie - GRADUATION FROM LAW SCHOOL!!! We would like for those of you who follow our blog to enjoy some photos from Brycie's big day.

whose name is Claire. Before we knew the Bowlbys, we watched them (enviously) across the aisle at Church for many months. We had begun the adoption process and enjoyed watching them interact with their Claire. We did not know their child's name at the time, so we (privately) called her "Clare," since that was the name we had chosen for our child. Lo and behold - her name really was "Claire" - just spelled with an "i." Go figure!!!

Brycie with Julia. Julia was the first person Brycie met during the summer before law school began. They became, and have remained, great friends. Best wishes on the Bar Exam, Julia.

Brycie and Allesan. Allesan has also been a dear friend since the beginning of law school. Brycie had the honor and privilege this year to be Allesan's sponsor as she took her studies to join the Catholic Church. Allesan was confirmed at the Easter Vigil in April. Congratulations, Allesan. On Friday, May 15, Brycie attended the awards ceremony and party for the law school graduates. The party was held at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. The law school had exclusive use of the museum for the evening which included hors d'oeuvres and drinks and free access to all the art exhibits. A caricature artist was there doing free caricatures. A wonderful evening until the "downpour." The Oklahoma skies opened up and rained and rained and rained. Finally, Jim had to run for the car about 200 yards away. We will know soon if his wool suit will recover.

On April 25, 2009, we attended a most marvelous banquet at the Grand Ballroom of the Skirvin Hotel in Oklahoma City. The banquet was a scholarship fundraiser for OCU School of Law scholarships, and the invitation committee included a number of the elite graduating law school seniors. It was probably one of the finest and most enjoyable banquets we've ever attended. Here are some photos of a few of the celebrities.

He replied, also tongue-in-cheek, "are we lacking knowledge?" Brycie had the absolute top grade in the class and won the CALI award for the top grade. Maybe she wasn't lacking knowledge. Actually, she has received a CALI award every semester she has been in law school. There I go bragging on my wife again.

Clare Goes To Villa Teresa Catholic School

We are excited to announce that Clare began school today at Villa Teresa Catholic School. This school is located here in Oklahoma City and is run by Carmelite nuns. It is for children from pre-school through fourth grade. It is very important to us that Clare receive a Catholic education and we feel that Villa Teresa will be a wonderful beginning for her. When Clare arrived in Oklahoma from China last November we had all the adjustment and language issues to deal with, along with her health issues. Clare had the opportunity to jump right into a learning environment at Abundant Life home school run by Miss Linda. We will be forever grateful to Miss Linda for the great start she gave our little Clare, but we now feel that Clare is ready to take the next step. Thank you Miss Linda.

Brycie's OCU Law Review Banquet 2009

On March 27, 2009, I was honored to join Brycie in attending the Oklahoma City University School of Law banquet honoring the OCU Law Review editors and staff. They publish a law review journal which is circulated to law schools, law firms, law libraries, banks, corporations, and government entities worldwide. The journal publishes scholarly articles, notes and comments, and is very helpful in researching highly specialized areas of the law. Most law schools publish a law review journal. In 2008 Brycie was honored by having her law review article published. Quite an accomplishment, I must say. Brycie won't brag on herself, but I sure don't mind bragging on her. I am extremely proud of her. In mid-May, Brycie will graduate with honors from OCU School of Law and will sit for the Oklahoma Bar Exam in July.

Lent and the Easter season is our favorite time of year. We are so thankful that God sent his Son to live among us and to die so that our sins may be forgiven! He is risen!!! Clare has eagerly participated in this holy season. She received ashes on Ash Wednesday, abstained from meat on Fridays, prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Rosary, attended Mass on Holy Thursday, communion and veneration of the cross on Good Friday, and the 3-hour Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. She was able to witness the baptism of 5 people, and we explained to her that she too would be baptized soon. Thank you God for guiding us as we help Clare learn more about you and your Church!!

Tornadoes and Hail in February in Oklahoma City!!!

Today was a most unusual day in Oklahoma City. We had a series of tornadoes come through Oklahoma City and Edmond. The first, and most deadly, was on the ground for over ten minutes and caused some significant damage as it crossed our town from southwest to northeast. Many homes and businesses were destroyed; power lines were knocked down; cars were crushed; trees were uprooted. Our home was about two miles north of the big tornado. All we got was a yard full of quarter size hail. Jim's poor pickup was in the driveway, but it really doesn't matter. It has been hailed on so many times before as Jim used to do some storm spotting in the Oklahoma Panhandle and that was the vehicle he used.

It is a lot of fun just watching Clare around the house as she enjoys herself. She loves to do "artsy" things, and she loves to watch movies on her little portable DVD.

Great Wall Chinese New Year Party

On January 31, Clare got to attend her first Chinese New Year Party with our agency, Great Wall China Adoption. Here are some photos of the children and their families. Sorry it has been so long between posts. We've had a lot of things going on during the past week or so, but we'll catch up. Keep checking.

Snow Day 2!!!

Wednesday, January 28, was another snow day, so the girls talked the moms into sledding again, and Clare got to help build her first snowman. Everyone had a blast!!!

The ice and snow storm kept everyone home from school and work today, and we had a blast with the Ventrescas and Brittany!!! We're pretty sure it doesn't get this cold in Shantou and that Clare had never seen snow before we brought her home. She LOVED it!! The two videos are classic "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation." The first video shows the three girls, Daniela, Clare & Brittany, hurtling toward the dumpster! Amazingly (thank you, Jesus), they slid right beside it instead of into it! The second video is of Jim and Clare sailing backwards then off the curb into a parking lot. Sandra opened the 4 lb. can of tuna at noon, and we gorged ourselves on tuna salad sandwiches. This evening, we dined on egg drop soup and pizza - one of Angelo's special combinations. We are so fortunate to have such wonderful and FUN neighbors!

Triple Birthday Party

On January 10 we had a triple birthday party for Jim (January 8), Clare (January 6), and Sandra (January 13). The Ventrescas brought a pinata, and everyone braved the cold to watch the kids whack it with a baseball bat.

Working on the Alphabet

Clare's ESL teacher wants us to work with Clare on learning the alphabet, so we've been doing just that. We thought she would immediately learn the letters, but we have discovered that this is going to be a bit more difficult. When we get a bit frustrated we stop and think what it would be like for us to be thrown into the Chinese culture with no choice but to learn the language. How well would we do? Now we are working on just a few letters at a time. We have her write the letters over and over and say the letter out loud each time she writes it on the board. Her ESL teacher also wants her to keep a journal.

Bicycle Built For Two

We all pooled our Christmas and Birthday money and bought a "Half-Wheeler" to hook onto Brycie's bicycle so that Clare could ride along with us as we exercise. Looks fun - is fun!! And, it's quite a workout for Brycie. Clare loves it. She can pedal - or not pedal - and sail along with Mama.

Brycie Begins Final Semester of Law School

On January 12, 2009, Brycie began her last semester of law school. The road is long and arduous, but the end is in sight. She will graduate on May 16, 2009, and take the Oklahoma Bar Exam in July.

Clare's ESL Teacher

From the moment we arrived home with Clare, we have been anxious to begin her ESL (English as a Second Language) training. Our plan is to send Clare to Rosary Catholic School as soon as she is ready (hopefully next Fall). So, we contacted the Putnam City School System (the school district where we live) and scheduled an appointment. Brycie and Clare met with the director on January 5 and he arranged for a teacher. Mrs. Dorothy Smith is a retired ESL instructor and comes to our home at least once a week for several hours of training. We believe that Clare will be a quick learner and will be ready for Rosary next Fall. Thank you, Mrs. Smith.

Last Thursday Clare and Mama went to see Drew play basketball. He is #14 in the white jersey. Drew scored a LOT of points, and his team won!! Way to go, Drew!!!

Clare had a wonderful birthday yesterday - her first as a US Citizen and as a member of her forever family. She had a little party at school; she got to go to her favorite resaurant; our friends, the Ventresca family, came over with a gift and to share cupcakes! Whew! Happy Birthday to our little angel!!

It was interesting watching how Clare reacted to her first Christmas. From family gathering together to all the wonderful food to the opening of presents Clare was, very simply, in awe. Just look at her little face. We spent a lot of time telling Clare about Jesus and just why we celebrate Christmas.

We spent Christmas in Guymon, Oklahoma, at Brycie's dad's and step-mother's. All 6 grandkids were there, and everyone got to meet Clare!! We had a great time!! The meal was unbelievable - prime rib, lobster, grilled shrimp, grilled salmon, shrimp cocktail, and Cheesecake Factory cheesecake - YUM!! Thanks, Granterrie!!!

Today, Clare and her friend Claire Bowlby had a play date to McDonalds, then to Hafer Park in Edmond, Oklahoma. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and the girls had a great time swinging and sliding. We have introduced Sue and Claire Bowlby in earlier posts. Sue and Bill Bowlby were so very instrumental in helping us keep our "chins up" during the long wait for Clare. It is wonderful that Clare and Claire can be good friends.

Clare has been enjoying her Fisher Price nativity set this Christmas. Her cousin Darcy (Aunt Jan and Uncle Dave's daughter) made a woodblock nativity set for Clare.
